SCRUMstudy is a real certification body with a public credential registry, free and paid Scrum exams, and a published fee structure. It is also less widely recognised than Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance, and it teaches from its own SBOK® Guide rather than the Scrum Guide. Whether it is worth your time depends on what you need the credential for, how much you want to spend, and whether you value structured self-paced study over a live class.
This review covers what learners say, how the exams work, what the fees are, how recognition really looks, and how SCRUMstudy compares with the two names most hiring managers search for first. We sell SCRUMstudy vouchers, so we say where we stand. We also say where the alternatives are the better fit.

What SCRUMstudy is
SCRUMstudy is a certification body and training provider for Scrum and Agile. Its credentials are built on the SBOK® Guide (Scrum Body of Knowledge), which is the provider’s own reference. The core Scrum ladder includes Scrum Fundamentals Certified (SFC™), Scrum Master Certified (SMC®), Scrum Product Owner Certified (SPOC®), SCRUM Agile Master Certified (SAMC™) and Scrum Developer Certified (SDC®), plus specialist tracks.
The first thing to separate is Scrum from Agile. Scrum is one framework, defined by the Scrum Guide. Agile is the wider set of values and approaches that Scrum sits within. SCRUMstudy’s material covers Scrum as its own body of knowledge, so you should treat it as a provider-specific interpretation and not a neutral description of every Agile practice.
Is SCRUMstudy legitimate?
Yes, in the sense that matters for a basic check: it is an operating certifier whose holders can be looked up. SCRUMstudy runs an official Certification Registry on its website, where credential holders can be verified. That gives an employer a way to confirm that a certificate was issued.

Legitimacy and recognition are different questions, though. A credential can be genuine and verifiable and still carry less weight with a particular recruiter than another. We cover that below.
What learners say in SCRUMstudy reviews
Reviews are mixed, which is normal for a provider with a large, global candidate base. On Trustpilot, some reviewers praise the training materials and the convenience of online access. Others, including a December 2023 reviewer, criticise the e-learning experience and customer service.
In practice, the complaints and praise tend to fall into three areas:
- Materials: Supporters like having one structured body of knowledge and an online preparatory course. Critics find the SBOK® long and prescriptive.
- Exams: Candidates describe questions as closely tied to the SBOK®. One learner advised reading the SBOK thoroughly because many SMC questions come from it.
- Support: Experiences vary. Treat any single review, positive or negative, as one data point.
A fair reading is this: if you study the SBOK® and sit the exam, you will probably get what the provider promises. If you expect live coaching and a community of practice, you will probably be disappointed.
How the exams work
Exam format is provider-specific, so never assume one SCRUMstudy rule applies to every credential. The figures below are from SCRUMstudy’s own pages.
| Credential | Questions | Time | Delivery | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SFC™ (Scrum Fundamentals Certified) | 40 | 60 minutes | Online, unproctored | No negative marking; 30 correct answers to pass |
| SMC® (Scrum Master Certified) | 100 | 120 minutes | Online, unproctored | Stated pass rate of 95% |
SCRUMstudy’s SMC® and SAMC™ use online unproctored exams, not generic proctored assessments. Unproctored does not mean easier or open-book by default, and a proctored exam is not inherently more credible. Read the exam rules on the provider’s page before you sit one.
Difficulty is personal. It depends on your Scrum experience, how well you know the SBOK®, and how you study. We would not generalise the difficulty of one exam to another.
What SCRUMstudy certification costs
SCRUMstudy’s own site lists fees from free at the SFC level up to USD 800 at the ESMC level, and the enrolment page is the place to confirm the current figures. Instructor-led classes on its homepage start from USD 545.
Five details are worth knowing:
- Every certification comes with a free online preparatory course valid for two months. After that it renews at USD 35 per month and can be cancelled at any time.
- SCRUMstudy offers two free exam retakes on its paid programmes. The free SFC level has unlimited retakes.
- SFC™ costs USD 0: you register for free Primary Membership, use the online course and take the exam with no exam fee. It has no experience or education prerequisites, and the certification is valid for life.
- The free SFC™ service includes concept videos, study guides, a glossary app and registry listing, and the page offers a 424-page SBOK® Guide e-book.
- Renewal and maintenance rules differ by credential. Our page on maintaining your SCRUMstudy certification explains how to check yours.
When you compare Scrum Master costs, keep exam fees, mandatory training, optional preparation, retakes and renewal separate. They are different line items, and an exam-only price is not automatically the cheapest route overall. Our Scrum Master certification cost guide breaks them down by provider.

Is SCRUMstudy recognised by employers?
This is the question behind most searches, and the honest answer is that recognition varies by employer, industry and country. We cannot promise that any employer prefers any certification, and no certificate proves on its own that you can do the job.
What the evidence does show:
- Critics in the Agile community argue that SCRUMstudy is less recognised than Scrum Alliance or Scrum.org, and point out that its method comes from the SBOK® Guide, not the Scrum Guide. That is an opinion, but it is a common one, and you should expect to hear it in interviews.
- Surveys of project professionals show where the market’s attention sits. PMI France’s 2025 barometer reports that 13% of respondents held the Scrum.org PSM and 10% held the PSPO. Those are French respondents, not a UK or global measure, and SCRUMstudy is not broken out there.
- Certification can help in general terms. The 2025 Pearson VUE Value of Certification Report found that 32% of certified IT professionals worldwide reported a salary increase after earning an industry certification. It is a self-reported survey across IT certifications, not evidence about SCRUMstudy specifically.
A practical test: search for the job titles you want in your city, read ten adverts, and see which credentials they name. If the adverts say “Scrum Master” with no named certifier, a verifiable credential plus real examples of your work will usually matter more than the logo.
SCRUMstudy vs Scrum.org vs Scrum Alliance
These three bodies are separate, with different assessment models. We sell SCRUMstudy vouchers only. We do not sell Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance credentials, and we list them here so you can compare on facts.
| SCRUMstudy SMC® | Scrum.org PSM I | Scrum Alliance CSM® | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam | 100 questions, 120 minutes, online, unproctored | 80 questions, 60 minutes | 50 questions, 60 minutes |
| Pass mark | Provider-stated pass rate of 95% | 85% | 74% |
| Required course | Free preparatory course included, per SCRUMstudy | None required | 16-hour course required before the exam |
| Core text | SBOK® Guide | Scrum Guide | Scrum Guide and course content |
| Pricing | Set by SCRUMstudy; our SMC® voucher is £249 | Set by Scrum.org; lifetime validity, no renewal fees | Course price set by each Certified Scrum Trainer |
The exam figures for the other two providers are summarised in our Scrum exam format guide. Check each provider’s official page before you pay, as fees and rules can change.
Three points of difference matter more than the table:
- Source text. Scrum.org and Scrum Alliance both align to the Scrum Guide. SCRUMstudy aligns to its SBOK®. The two overlap but they are not identical. If you take SCRUMstudy, read the Scrum Guide as well.
- Learning model. Scrum Alliance’s CSM® is built around a live course. Scrum.org lets you self-study and sit the exam. SCRUMstudy sits closer to the self-paced end, with a preparatory course included. Do not assume Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org assess learning the same way, and do not assume any of them is open-book because it is delivered online.
- Cost structure. A live CSM® course, a Scrum.org exam attempt and a SCRUMstudy voucher are different purchases. Compare the total you will actually pay, including retakes and renewal.
Which Scrum credential is right for you?
Use these criteria and ignore the brand noise.
- You are new to Scrum and want to test the water. Start with the free Scrum Fundamentals Certified. It has no prerequisites and costs nothing to attempt, so the downside is a few hours of study.
- You want a Scrum Master credential on a budget, self-paced. The Scrum Master Certified (SMC®) route suits you if you are comfortable studying alone. For the Agile Master track, see SAMC™.
- A specific employer or job advert names Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance. Take that one. A credential the employer asks for beats one it has never heard of.
- You are a developer. Scrum Developer Certified focuses on engineering practices such as TDD, CI and refactoring.
- You are moving into product work. The Scrum Guide makes the Product Owner accountable for maximising product value and for Product Backlog management. SPOC® covers that role in SCRUMstudy’s framework. Product Manager, by contrast, is an organisational job title whose responsibilities vary by context, not a fixed Scrum role.
If you cannot tell which fits, our Scrum & Agile category lists every option, and the project management certification guide maps credentials to career stage.
Our perspective
We see SCRUMstudy as a practical, low-cost way to learn Scrum and hold a verifiable credential. We do not see it as a shortcut past the Scrum Guide, and we would not tell you it outranks Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance in the market.
Here is how we advise people who ask us:
- Treat the free SFC™ as a trial. If you finish it and still want to go deeper, you have lost nothing.
- Read the current Scrum Guide whichever credential you choose. Scrum Teams are typically ten people or fewer, Sprints last one month or less, and several Scrum Teams working on one product can share a Product Owner, Product Backlog and Product Goal. Those are Scrum Guide ideas, and any certification should be consistent with them.
- Pair the certificate with evidence. A certificate shows you studied and passed an exam. It does not prove performance. Describe a team you worked with, a Sprint you helped improve, a backlog you shaped.
- Be sceptical of anyone, including us, who promises that a certificate will get you a job or a raise.
SCRUMstudy is a good fit for self-directed learners who want structure and a modest price. It is a weaker fit if your target employer specifically asks for another body.

FAQ
Is SCRUMstudy legit?
Yes. It is an operating certifier with an official Certification Registry where holders can be verified. Legitimate does not mean equally recognised, so check which credentials your target employers name.
Is SCRUMstudy recognised?
Recognition varies by employer, industry and country, and we cannot promise any employer will prefer it. Some practitioners rate Scrum.org and Scrum Alliance as better known. Review job adverts in your own market before you decide.
Is the SCRUMstudy exam hard?
Difficulty depends on your background and preparation, and it should not be generalised across credentials. The SMC® exam has 100 questions in 120 minutes and is unproctored, and learners say many questions come from the SBOK®. The SFC™ is a shorter 40-question, 60-minute exam.
Does SCRUMstudy cost money to renew?
The included online preparatory course lasts two months and then renews at USD 35 per month, cancellable at any time. The SFC™ certification is valid for life. Other credentials have their own maintenance rules, so check the page for the one you hold.
