Career switcher reviewing an SPOC voucher

Product owner certification cost usually splits into three parts: mandatory training, an assessment and renewal. The four credentials most people compare are SPOC, PSPO, CSPO and SAFe POPM, and the outlay varies depending on whether you choose self-paced or live instructor-led training. Our SPOC voucher is listed at £299.

How do the four product owner certification costs compare side by side?

Product owner certification cost is easier to judge when you line the credentials up on the same four questions: is training mandatory, is there an assessment, what do you pay at the start, and what do you pay to keep the credential. The table below uses only figures we can stand behind. Where a provider sets its own price or policy, we say so rather than guess.

Credential Mandatory training Assessment Initial cost Renewal
SPOC (SCRUMstudy) Self-paced online learning available, not an attendance requirement Online unproctored exam £299 with our voucher Set by the provider, check the SPOC product page
PSPO (Scrum.org) Not mandatory Exam, taken per attempt Set by Scrum.org, check its current page Provider-specific, check Scrum.org
CSPO (Scrum Alliance) Yes, a mandated 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer No exam Set by each course provider $100 for foundational level, 20 SEUs
SAFe POPM (Scaled Agile) Yes, a Scaled Agile course Exam, fee structure set by Scaled Agile Set by authorised training partners Set by Scaled Agile, check its current terms

Two rows deserve a closer look. For CSPO, Scrum Alliance confirms there is no test requirement: you earn the credential by completing the mandated 16-hour course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer. That means the course price is effectively the whole entry cost. For renewal, Scrum Alliance charges by level, and the fee you pay depends on the highest certification you hold.

SPOC and SMC are certifications we sell directly, and SCRUMstudy SMC and SAMC use online unproctored exams. SAFe POPM is an external credential, not one of our vouchers, so always confirm its current fees on the Scaled Agile site before you budget.

A final point on reading the table: a lower initial cost does not make a credential better or worse for your situation. It only tells you what you pay on day one. Employer recognition varies, and no certification proves real-world competence by itself. Treat the table as a starting point and confirm final figures on each provider’s own page before you commit.

What does each credential actually cost and include?

Here is the cost breakdown credential by credential, so you can see what your money buys.

  • SPOC: We list Scrum Product Owner Certified (SPOC®) at £299 in our catalogue. Check the SPOC product page for the voucher’s learning materials and exam scheduling inclusions. Exact inclusions are described on the SPOC product page, and you should read that page before buying, because inclusions are set product by product.
  • PSPO: Scrum.org assesses the Professional Scrum Product Owner credential through an exam, and the fee is charged per attempt. Training is not mandatory, so some candidates self-study and pay only the assessment fee, while others add a paid course. Because Scrum.org sets and updates its own pricing, check its current page for the attempt fee, question count and time limit before you plan a budget.
  • CSPO: Certified Scrum Product Owner is attendance-based. Completing the mandated 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer leads to the credential, and there is no exam and therefore no exam fee. After the course you receive a welcome email and accept the licence agreement to download the credential and digital badge. The price you pay is the course price, which each trainer or training provider sets, so quotes vary by trainer, format and location.
  • SAFe POPM: SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager is a Scaled Agile credential, and it sits in a different category from Scrum-based credentials. SAFe is not simply scaled Scrum: it supports Scrum, Kanban and broader Lean-Agile practices, and it puts heavy emphasis on dependencies, architecture and coordination across teams. Training is delivered by authorised partners and is followed by an exam, so the price depends on the partner and the course format. Check Scaled Agile’s current terms for exam inclusion, retakes and renewal.

A pattern emerges once you set these side by side. CSPO front-loads the cost into the mandated 16-hour course. PSPO lets you decide how much training to buy. SPOC is available through a single fixed voucher price. SAFe POPM tends to ask the most of you in training time because it covers a wider organisational framework.

Role clarity matters too, because it affects which credential is worth the money. The Scrum Guide makes the Product Owner accountable for maximising the value of the product and for Product Backlog management. Product Manager, by contrast, is an organisational job title whose responsibilities vary by context, and it is not a fixed Scrum role. A credential may teach vocabulary and practices, but your actual duties come from your employer and team.

Finally, remember that sticker price is only part of the picture. A cheap credential with an expensive renewal can cost more over time than a pricier one that renews cheaply. The next section explains why prices differ so much, so you can compare like with like.

Which training, assessment and renewal factors drive the price?

Four structural variables explain most price differences between credentials.

  1. Live instructor time. A course with a live trainer costs more than self-paced video, because you are paying for scheduled hours with a person. CSPO’s mandated course format is the clearest example.
  2. Course length and format. Multi-day courses, extra workshops and cohort-based delivery add to the quote. Self-paced learning lets you spend only the time you need.
  3. Certification body fees. Some providers charge a separate exam fee per attempt, which means a failed attempt costs you again. Others fold the assessment into the course price or, as with CSPO, have no exam at all.
  4. Included membership and renewal obligations. Some credentials bundle a membership period, and most have a renewal cycle that adds a recurring cost. Renewal usually depends on earning continuing-education points, called SEUs (Scrum Education Units) or PDUs (Professional Development Units) depending on the body.

Renewal is the cost people forget to budget for. Scrum Alliance publishes clear renewal tiers, which make a useful example of how the model works:

Foundational certifications such as CSPO need 20 SEUs and a $100 renewal fee; advanced levels need 30 SEUs and $175, and professional levels need 40 SEUs and $250. The fee follows the highest-level certification you hold, so you do not pay separate fees to renew several credentials at or below that level.

That last rule has a practical consequence. If you hold more than one Scrum Alliance credential, one renewal covers those at or below your highest level, so stacking foundational credentials does not multiply your renewal bill. Remember, though, that this rule belongs to Scrum Alliance only. PSPO, SPOC and SAFe POPM each follow their own renewal rules, so never assume another provider works the same way.

When you compare quotes, ask the same five questions every time: Is training mandatory? Is the exam included? What does a retake cost? Is there a renewal fee, and how often? What does the price include beyond the course itself? Writing the answers in a simple grid for each credential often reveals that the cheapest headline price is not the cheapest total.

Five questions for comparing certification costs

How can you budget for certification and cut the total cost?

Most savings come from choosing the right delivery format and buying smart, not from skipping the learning. These tactics work for career switchers and working professionals alike.

  • Use a voucher platform. A digital voucher gives you access to the provider’s learning materials and exam route at a fixed price, which removes the guesswork of piecing together separate courses and documents. Our SPOC voucher at £299 is one example.
  • Choose self-paced when it suits you. If you learn well from video and can set your own schedule, self-paced training avoids the premium that live instruction carries.
  • Consider a bundle. Check the Dual Agile Pack page for current details.
  • Ask about employer funding. Many employers will fund certification that supports a role you are already doing or moving into. A concise note linking the credential to your team’s work may help.
  • Start with a free introductory step. We offer Scrum Fundamentals Certified at £0, which lets you explore the field before paying for another credential.
  • Spread renewal costs. If your chosen credential renews on a cycle, diary the date now so a renewal fee never lands on top of another large purchase.

Pro Tip: Before you buy, check each credential’s renewal terms and note any relevant dates in your calendar.

For a wider look at how these decisions work on the Scrum Master side, our guide to Scrum Master certification cost uses the same cost framework, which makes it easy to compare the two paths if you are weighing both roles.

What should you expect when you buy through GetVoucher?

We are a certification voucher platform. We work with established providers and certification bodies including VMEdu, SCRUMstudy, SMstudy, 6sigmastudy and NGstudy, and our job is to make it simpler to find the right credential, access the voucher and prepare efficiently.

For Agile, our listed voucher prices are SPOC at £299 and SMC at £249. Both are certifications we sell directly, and they are separate from external credentials such as SAFe POPM, which you would arrange through Scaled Agile and its authorised partners.

What a purchase includes depends on the product. For each Scrum certification, check the product page for details about digital access, study materials and exam scheduling support. Delivery, materials and scheduling support are described product by product, so we encourage you to read each product page before you buy rather than assume every voucher includes the same things.

Our product owner certification overview explains how SPOC fits into the wider market, and our SPOC vs CSPO vs PSPO comparison goes deeper on the differences between the three paths if you are still deciding.

How long does it take from buying a voucher to certification?

The honest answer is that it depends on the credential and on how much time you can give it each week, so we avoid quoting a single average. What we can describe is the sequence, though timing varies by credential and personal schedule.

With a self-paced voucher such as SPOC, check the product page for included learning materials and exam scheduling support, then follow the provider’s process to prepare and take the online unproctored exam. Because you control the pace, someone studying a little each evening will take longer than someone who blocks out a few full days. There is no fixed cohort date to wait for.

An attendance-based credential works differently. CSPO requires a course with a Certified Scrum Trainer, so your timeline is shaped by when a course is scheduled and how it is split across days. Once you complete the course, you receive a welcome email, accept the licence agreement and download the credential and digital badge, so the credential follows the course directly with no exam stage in between.

PSPO and SAFe POPM sit somewhere between the two: you choose how much preparation to do, then book the assessment according to the provider’s own process.

A practical way to plan is to work backwards from when you need the credential, for example for a job application or performance review. Allow time for revision and any scheduling constraints, and avoid leaving the exam until the end. If you are a career switcher, building in extra time to apply what you learn to a real or practice backlog usually pays off more than rushing to finish.

What payment methods and financing options are available?

Payment options depend on where you buy, so check the checkout of the specific product page before you plan around any method. Current details are on our site, and we would rather say so than imply a financing option exists. If you need to spread the cost, these routes are worth exploring.

  • Employer sponsorship. Many organisations pay for certification directly or reimburse it after you pass. Ask your manager or learning and development team before you buy, and keep the receipt.
  • Personal budgeting. Because self-paced vouchers carry a fixed price, you can save towards a known figure and buy when you are ready, instead of paying for a live course that fills up on a trainer’s schedule.
  • Phasing your purchases. If you intend to earn more than one credential, buy them in sequence rather than together, and start with a free or low-cost step to confirm the path suits you.
  • Bundles. A bundle may reduce the number of separate purchases you make, which can lower the total outlay compared with buying two credentials individually.

For attendance-based and partner-delivered credentials such as CSPO and SAFe POPM, payment terms are set by the trainer or training partner, so ask them directly about instalments, invoicing for employers and refund or transfer policies. Policies vary widely between providers and between individual trainers, and a short email before booking can save a lot of frustration later.

Matching your budget to the right product owner path

If you need to move into a Product Owner role quickly and your budget is tight, an attendance-based or self-paced foundational credential is a sensible first step. It can give you shared vocabulary and a certificate, and may help you discuss backlog work in interviews without a large upfront bill.

If you are already working in a product role and thinking about longer-term progression, investing in higher-level or framework-specific training can make sense, but only when you can point to a real need, such as working across many teams where SAFe’s coordination focus applies. Team count alone should never decide that choice.

Whichever route you pick, align the credential with the role itself. The Scrum Guide places accountability for maximising product value and managing the Product Backlog with the Product Owner, so choose training that helps you do exactly that, and remember that certification supports your practice but never replaces it.

FAQ

How much does product owner certification cost in total?

Total cost depends on the credential, the training format and any renewal fee. Self-paced options sit at the lower end, while live instructor-led courses sit higher. Our SPOC voucher is listed at £299, and Scrum Alliance charges $100 to renew a foundational credential.

Does CSPO have an exam fee?

No. CSPO currently has no exam, so there is no exam fee to pay. Scrum Alliance confirms that completing the mandated course with a Certified Scrum Trainer leads to the credential, so the course price is the main cost.

Which product owner certification is cheapest?

The cheapest option depends on whether you count renewal and training as well as the initial price. A self-paced voucher with a fixed price is usually the most predictable route. Compare total outlay across training, assessment and renewal rather than the headline price alone.

Do product owner certifications need renewing?

It depends on the provider. Scrum Alliance credentials renew on a cycle with a fee and continuing-education points, while other providers follow their own rules. Always check the provider’s current terms before you plan your budget.

Can I get a product owner certification without a degree?

Credential requirements are set by each provider, and the certifications we cover do not rely on a degree in the way a university qualification does. Check the prerequisites on the provider’s page for the specific credential. Certification alone does not guarantee a job, so pair it with practical experience.
